Strum

(Windows only, for now)

This VST lets you play virtual strings by hovering your mouse over them. When you hold MIDI notes, corresponding strings appear on the interface. As you move your mouse across these strings, the plugin sends MIDI note events matching each string.

Several notes can be held at once, allowing for expressive, gesture-based performance with the mouse.

The plugin allows you to play the strings using the mouse, the number keys on your keyboard (1, 2, 3...), or even the mod wheel — perfect for expressive (not work in FL Sudio, for now).

Parameters:

• time: Controls how long a note lasts (in seconds) after being triggered.
• cut: If enabled, MIDI notes are stopped when their corresponding key is released. If disabled, the note keeps playing for the full duration set in time, even if the MIDI key is released.
• only press: This only affects playback using the computer keyboard. If enabled, releasing a number key does not send a MIDI off message.
• layout: Allows switching between vertical and horizontal strings.
• reverse: Switches the direction of the pitch layout, with high notes on the left or right.
• vel mode: Sets the maximum velocity of the note. You can choose between using the original MIDI note velocity or forcing it to the maximum (127).
• onset: Percentage that affects how much the mouse speed influences the note duration. It multiplies the duration (from time) by the mouse movement speed.
• vel mult: Controls how much of the velocity is affected by the cursor speed.
• capture mode: Allows you to choose whether mouse movement triggers are registered in one direction or both directions.

Tested in Ableton Live 11, FL Studio 2024, and Bitwig Studio.
